Doesn’t the campsite offer an ice-block freezing service? A leisure battery is the one to use, as cranking standard batteries don’t take kindly to being run until flat. Should be an easy calculation as to how long the fridge will run on a battery of a given capacity, but a friend of mine can run a coolbox for a weekend on a reasonable-sized battery. Oh, and I take it the coolbox has a fuse built in? If not an inline fuse in the cable would be a nice thing to have.
Milkie Member You’re very likely to blow it if you run it straight of the battery. I think a battery is capable of delivering 10amps. A cigarette lighter is transformed down to 5amps. Pushing 10amps through your fridge is likely to damage it. I’m no eleccy guy, correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought a device would only draw as much current as it needs… e.

Our mains hook-up kit (surface-mounted, v) is all you need to install v power in your caravan or camper. Included in the kit is a surface-mounted inlet socket, consumer unit with breakers, 2 x 13amp switched sockets and all cables and fittings.
We have found that the fridge doesn’t work well on 12v from the leisure battery and have disconnected the 12v supply to it. If you are connected to v hookup its pointless using the 12v LB or the gas to run the fridge anyway. We travel to site with all our chilled and frozen foodstuffs in a Coolbox until we are hooked up to v on site and our onboard fridge is up and running. We pre-freeze about 5 x of the Thermos type freezer blocks to put in the bottom of the coolbox and find that everything stays frozen for the whole day in the coolbox.
The electrical systems are quite complicated until you get used to them. It can run your fridge but v or gas is much preferable. It will also automatically power your 12v leisure battery charger if one is fitted. In emergencies when your LB is flat for some reason you can switch to ‘CAR’ to run your 12v items like the lighting and waterpump. However you should be aware that it is now draining your van’s starting and running battery flat so it should never be switched to CAR except for a short while in an emergency.
When traveling or not in use the usual position for your main switch is set to ‘OFF’ Your van’s alternator should charge both the van’s and the leisure battery automatically whilst the engine is running. You should leave the switch in the off position and the split charging system does the rest. I hope this is helpful. Please tell me if I have got anything wrong so that I can correct it and this doesn’t cause any further confusion.

Power and Charging Guide A guide to powering your portable fridge When looking to purchase a new portable fridge, the other important thing to consider besides the fridge itself is a means of powering it. Powering Your Fridge v AC Mains Power The simplest and most obvious means of powering your portable fridge is connecting it to a v AC power point, such as the power points in your home or on powered sites at a caravan park or camping ground.
This provides the fridge with unlimited electricity and will keep it running happily for weeks on end. Almost all portable fridges have the ability to run on v power built in as standard, though be sure to check just in case, as some of the smaller sized options do not have this feature. This is a great way to save power on your dedicated fridge battery when travelling between destinations, without the worry that the power will run out.
Just be sure not to run the fridge from your vehicle whilst the car is off for too long. Depending on the size of your battery, it will be able to power your fridge efficiently for several days. So can you just use any old battery to power your fridge, like a car battery?

Just like a fuse, MCBs sit in the live feed to prevent excessive electrical current being drawn. However, whereas excess electricity in a fuse makes a fuse wire melt, an MCB switch will trip i. To make the circuit live again, all you have to do is flick the switch back. Trying to draw more will trip out the supply. Although MCBs and fuses provide a degree of electrical protection, there are still hazardous circumstances against which MCBs cannot protect.

Last updated on in Camping Tips Sometimes using electricity in your tent is essential, especially if you want to heat your tent in the cooler months. There are also times when a kettle, microwave, lights, and a small fridge may be useful on a long camp, as well as a bottle steriliser for babies. Not to mention a phone charger! What electrical appliances can you use at the campsite? The majority of campsites in the UK will provide a 3 pin connector rated at 16 Amps, which can provide a V supply, just like at home.
The key here is understanding how much you can plug in before the circuit breaker trips. This may be something only the campsite owner can do, which may not be possible between 9 pm and 9 am, or there could even be a charge for resetting the electrics. Working out exactly how much you can plug in and turn on requires an understanding of Ohms law and also taking into account any voltage drop which can cause a current increase with long lengths of cable!
You can use the table below to see how much power you have available depending on the current available at the campsite.
